NZRC CORE Immediate – Dental Practice

Designed specifically for dentists and dental team members, particularly teams involved in providing and monitoring sedation.

This course combines the full NZRC CORE Immediate certification with practical emergency scenario training tailored specifically to dental practice.

Rather than completing generic clinical scenarios, your team will work through emergencies that may realistically occur within the dental setting, with particular emphasis on recognising and managing sedation-related deterioration and medical emergencies.

Practical, Team-Based Training

Scenario training may include:

  • Airway obstruction and loss of airway
  • Respiratory depression and hypoventilation
  • Deterioration following sedation
  • Recognition of the critically unwell patient
  • Emergency airway management and oxygen therapy
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Cardiac arrest and AED use
  • Appropriate escalation and calling for additional help
  • Team roles, leadership and closed-loop communication during an emergency

A key focus of the course is working together as a team.

In a real medical emergency, the response does not involve the dentist alone. Dental Assistants and other team members all have an important role to play. Training together allows your team to practise communication, role allocation, use of emergency equipment, and management of a deteriorating patient.

Training in Your Own Dental Practice

Wherever possible, private courses can be delivered within your own dental practice and clinical areas.

This allows scenarios to incorporate your:

  • Emergency equipment
  • Oxygen and airway equipment
  • Emergency medications
  • Dental chair and treatment rooms
  • AED
  • Practice emergency procedures
  • Available staff and team roles

Working within your own clinical environment makes the scenarios more realistic and allows your team to identify practical issues before they face a real emergency.
