Dentists
The NZDA verifies Resus Nelson’s courses to provide NZ Resuscitation Council Basic Life Support, CORE Immediate, and CORE Advanced courses, which must be revalidated every two years.
All Resus Nelson courses are registered through the New Zealand Dental Association website. Upon completion of a course or scenario training, a CPD number is issued.

Conscious Sedation for Dental Practice
Course Overview: Sedation Practice Standard Training
This course meets the mandatory DCNZ requirements for education and training in the Sedation Practice Standard. It is designed for all team members involved in monitoring sedated patients, whether in hospital settings or the community.
Please note that this course does not cover how to sedate patients but focuses on gaining certified competency in monitoring sedated individuals.
Course Details:
- Duration: Full day
- Format: Lectures, demonstrations, and scenario training
Participants Will Learn:
- Definitions and distinctions of minimal, moderate, and deep sedation
- Risks associated with sedation
- Refresher on anatomy and physiology related to sedation, including the respiratory, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems
- Monitoring techniques for sedated patients, including physical and physiological aspects and appropriate equipment
- Identification of sedation-related complications and protocols for advising the sedationist, managing abnormalities, and handling medical emergencies
Conscious Sedation Course:
- Purpose: The conscious sedation course provides advanced, specialized training focusing on the care and management of patients receiving sedation. This training covers aspects of sedation management in greater detail than CORE Advanced, which primarily addresses general emergency response skills like airway management and anaphylaxis.
Need for the Conscious Sedation Course:
- Integration with CORE Advanced: While CORE Advanced is crucial for emergency response, the conscious sedation course offers additional, specialized knowledge essential for effectively and safely managing patients under sedation. This makes it a complementary course rather than a replacement for CORE Advanced.
In summary, while CORE Advanced covers general emergency skills, the conscious sedation course is designed to provide in-depth training specific to sedation practices. Both courses are essential in ensuring comprehensive competence and safety for dentists performing sedation.
Scenario training
We also provide scenario-based training in acute medical emergencies for your dental team within your practice.
The New Zealand Dental Council recommends a six-month practice review involving all staff of medical emergency management to ensure an appropriate and coordinated emergency response.
