AED & Equipment Info
Gareth Jenkins founded AED Locations after teaching thousands of people how to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and use AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators).
During his training sessions, one question kept coming up: “Where is the nearest AED?”
Although there were many publicly accessible AEDs in the community, Gareth realised they were of little use if people didn’t know where to find them. That simple insight sparked the creation of AED Locations—a nationwide platform dedicated to helping people locate the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED) in an emergency.
People were dying within 50 metres of an AED because no one knew it was there.
Publishing AED locations online would make it much easier for people to find them in an emergency. But Gareth faced a challenge—he didn’t have the funding or technical expertise to build the platform himself.
That changed after The Listener published a story about heart attacks and AEDs. The article caught the attention of Abletech, a Wellington-based tech company, who reached out to Gareth with an offer to help.
Together, they built AED Locations—a user-friendly, accessible tool that now helps thousands of New Zealanders find the nearest AED when every second counts.
An AED can increase a person’s chance of survival by up to 80%—but only if it’s used quickly.
Today, thanks to Gareth and the team at Abletech, over 9,000 AED locations are mapped across New Zealand. You can find them on the AED Locations website or by downloading the free Android or iOS app, which helps you act fast when every second matters.
